“We saw a negative trend line between the time they were watching and the erectile function with partnered sex. Sixty-five percent found sex with a partner more exciting [than] watching pornography. The correlation was the strongest in the younger age group, below 35. Herbal supplements such as ginkgo biloba, saw palmetto, and yohimbe have been touted as sexual enhancers, and some men have been tempted to try them to treat erectile dysfunction. Bennett warns, however, that none has been approved by the FDA or even shown by any reliable studies to prevent, treat, or improve erectile dysfunction. Moreover, supplements are unregulated and can have many side effects or interfere with prescribed medications you’re already taking. Don’t jeopardize your health by taking a supplement to treat erectile dysfunction without first talking with your doctor.
Medications, such as treatment for high blood pressure, can also play a role. These drugs reduce blood pressure by reducing blood flow, which can affect erections. It is not recommended that men stop their blood pressure medications, of course. But some patients can eliminate their need for the treatment through changes in diet and exercise.
ED treatments block the action of PDE5, allowing more blood to flow into the penis. The resulting erection is firmer and usually lasts long enough to allow for satisfying sex.
